WiRED-Armenia Televises Training Program on Diabetes

iRED International is pleased to announce that WiRED-Armenia conducted its first ever televised health training session in Gavar, Armenia.

 

Instead of covering the training session as just a news event, the television station, KYAVAR TV, carried the entire educational forum to a wide audience, thus expanding considerably the reach of this session. Broadcasting to a television audience is a big step in increasing the potential impact of health training to a larger community; it represents the first time that the audience for WiRED’s training material has been extended by a broadcast medium.

WiRED-Armenia Director Sebouh Baghdoyan said, “Our presentation on September 9 of the WiRED International Diabetes Overview Module in Gavar was a great success. More than 20 parents and youth attended the event, which was covered by the KYAVAR TV station in Gavar.”

 

The training program was hosted by the Armenian WiRED Centre for Health Education, the Good Hope NGO and the Arabkir Medical Center, Gavar, Armenia. In his welcoming speech, Mr. Baghdoyan informed the participants about the activities of WiRED-Armenia and about the 15 available healthcare modules in Armenian. He singled out the dedicated work of Mariam Sargsyan, coordinator of the Gavarian translation team, who organized the day’s event. Attendees raised many questions about diabetes, which were answered by Mr. Baghdoyan and Ms. Anush Karabaghtsyan, a student at Yerevan Medical University and moderator of the session. U.S. Peace Corps volunteer Stephen Dufresne attended the session, as well as government officials and representatives of local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

 

The WiRED-Armenia partnership seeks to improve the well-being of the Armenian people, since poverty and the lack of reliable medical information have created serious healthcare concerns for them, and diabetes is a top issue. The WiRED-Armenia staff have begun combining group training programs with screening measures as an innovative way to put training into immediate action.

Thanks to its dedicated Armenian translators, WiRED’s Health Learning Center now offers 15 health education modules in the Armenian language on topics of pressing importance in Armenia such as diabetes, dental hygiene and quitting smoking. The three modules on diabetes cover an overview of diabetes, gestational diabetes and the effects of diabetes on eye health.
