WiRED Salutes Dr. David Alberts

BY ALLISON KOZICHAROW; EDITED BY BERNICE BORN

We welcome David Alberts, M.D., to the WiRED family. Dr. Alberts, an international leader in cancer research, now reviews cancer modules for our Community Health Information e-library. All WiRED modules are reviewed by medical experts, and WiRED is delighted to have such a distinguished professor of medicine as part of our team.

Throughout his career, Dr. Alberts has focused on translational cancer prevention and treatment research. The emphasis of his laboratory-based and clinical research has been on the chemoprevention and treatment of such pervasive and potentially deadly diseases as cancers of the breast, colon, ovary, and skin.

Dr. Alberts received his M.D. in 1966 from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He interned at the University of Wisconsin, before becoming a clinical associate in medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute’s Baltimore Cancer Research Center. Dr. Alberts was an internal medicine resident at the University of Minnesota and then served on the faculty of the University of California, San Francisco, for five years. He obtained Board Certification in Medicine and Medical Oncology in 1973, and he joined the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 1975 as an assistant professor, where he served for 38 years.

Under Dr. Alberts’ leadership the extensive research portfolio of The University of Arizona Cancer Center includes more than $60 million in annual research funding, covering four large National Cancer Institute (NCI) interdisciplinary programs and two Special Programs of Research Excellence, one in gastrointestinal cancers and one in lymphoma.

In June 2001 Dr. Alberts was acknowledged by Science as one of the top three National Institutes of Health-funded clinical researchers in the United States. In addition to receiving numerous awards, Dr. Alberts has written or co-authored more than 550 peer-reviewed publications, more than 100 book chapters and 60 invited articles, and has served as editor and co-editor of eight books.

Dr. Alberts retired as University of Arizona Cancer Center Director in 2013, but still holds numerous research grants and remains an active faculty member. His wife, Heather, runs the Better than Ever program at the cancer center.

WiRED board member Suellen Crano, Ph.D., a cancer survivor, said, “Dave saved my life, and I consider him not just a director of an NCI Cancer Center but my own personal cancer god!” WiRED feels fortunate to welcome Dr. Alberts.
