WiRED International's Community Health Information Center
and REEP's Voluntary Counseling and Testing Program
Go Hand-in-Hand to Benefit Youth

by Mary Makokha, Program Manager
Rural Education and Economic Enhancement Program (REEP)

Eric, age 20, was unaware of his health problem until he visited WiRED International's Community Health Information Center (CHIC) in Butula, Kenya. Intending to learn more about sexually transmitted diseases from WiRED's medical e-library, Eric realized that he might be suffering from syphilis. After reviewing the information, Eric verified what he suspected through medical testing at REEP's main office. REEP diagnosed Eric as HIV negative, but confirmed that he suffered from early stage syphilis.

Eric has become a regular visitor to the CHIC and he promotes the Center to his peers. Eric has persuaded more than 100 friends and colleagues to use the medical e-library of CD-Roms and to submit to voluntary counseling and testing through REEP.

By the time Tom, age 22, came to REEP for voluntary testing and counseling, he was sure that he was HIV positive. Tom had not associated the spots around his waist as symptoms of HIV until he reviewed WiRED's medical CD-Roms. By the time he was examined, he was able to link the spots with HIV/AIDS. Tom now attends a support group for people living with the illness.

The number of youth seeking REEP's voluntary counseling and testing increased as the number of young people visiting WiRED International's Community Health Information Center increased. More than 260 young people initiated voluntary counseling and testing during the past year, and each young person returned with at least one friend or relative. This resulted in the formation of a support group for young people living with AIDS.
