BY ALLISON KOZICHAROW AND BERNICE BORN

Good nutrition ensures a healthy body and protects it from disease. WiRED International just released a Nutrition for Adults module. WiRED will soon update its modules on Nutrition during Pregnancy and on Nutrition for Children, and it will add modules on Nutrition for Nursing Mothers and for Infant Feeding.

"The world has 800 million chronically hungry people, but it also has countries where more than 70% of the adult population is obese or overweight."
Margaret Chan, M.D.
Director-General
World Health Organization

Nutrition is the process of taking in foods the body needs to remain healthy. The World Health Organization defines good nutrition as an adequate, well-balanced diet combined with regular physical activity. Poor nutrition can lead to reduced immunity, increased susceptibility to disease, impaired physical and mental development and reduced productivity.

WiRED’s Nutrition for Adults module lists foods people need at different stages of life to meet their nutritional needs. The module describes the different kinds of nutrients and how they act to protect the body. Those nutrients include proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water.

At a recent meeting on nutrition in Brazil, World Health Organization Director-General Margaret Chan, M.D., said, “The world has 800 million chronically hungry people, but it also has countries where more than 70% of the adult population is obese or overweight. In terms of the nutritional requirements for healthy populations, countries in North America and Europe have nearly twice the food they need.”

WiRED believes that everyone deserves a healthy life, and a good start is to get educated about nutrition.
