WiRED Releases Module on Menstruation

Understanding her menstrual cycle is an important part of a woman’s overall health.

For many young girls, feelings of fear, shame and confusion are associated with this natural, healthy biological occurrence. It is wise to educate a girl about her reproductive abilities and contraceptive choices before she starts to menstruate.

WiRED International now offers a module on menstruation, the term used for the bleeding that most women experience
each month.

The module explains how the female body functions, what is considered a normal menstrual cycle (or period), and how to check for signs that important parts of the body may not be performing as they should. The course addresses such concerns as irregularities in periods (or not having them at all), painful periods, severe cramping, and abnormal menstrual flow, as well as the emotions and uncomfortable feelings sometimes associated with having a period. Issues like the use and risks of various sanitary products as well as how changes in diet and exercise can affect menstruation are covered as well.

In developing countries especially, educating young girls and women about menstruation and how it can be safely and comfortably managed empowers them with higher confidence and less embarrassment, and allows them to feel more positive about themselves and their bodies.

Far too many women across the underserved world are struggling with almost complete ignorance of their normal biological maturation and its consequences. Understanding menstruation supports women’s improved health and positive participation in society.
