Background

 

WiRED International, a non-profit organization, specializes in providing medical and health information in low-resource regions by way of computer technology. Our training material is written and peer reviewed by medical specialists; our health training modules are developed by computer experts for medical professionals and grassroots communities. We distribute the material globally without cost to users. WiRED partners with hospitals and clinics, medical schools, schools of public health, health ministries and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to distribute these training programs.

WiRED is launching a project in honor of the late U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of people in underserved countries. The purpose of the present project is to identify a group of partners to assist in providing critical health and medical training in low-income regions. Successful applicants will receive training packages consisting of computer hardware, a complete health training library of 350 modules and train-the-trainer assistance to bring these educational programs to medical professionals and local populations. This project extends our community outreach program designed to teach communities about prevention and good health. This community education work is consistent with Ambassador Stevens’s approach to community assistance for people in greatest need.

 

Who is eligible to apply?

 

The following organizations/institutions are encouraged to submit a grant application:

• Clinics and hospitals
• Medical schools
• Schools of public health
• Local school districts
• NGOs working in a health-related field

Project specifics

 

Successful applicants will receive a portable projector, a laptop computer, a complete training library and train-the-trainer assistance. Recipients will agree to:

• Use the equipment and the training software in health education sessions for local people.
• Provide a minimum of four reports describing their training sessions (brief online form).
• Conduct training sessions as volunteers.
• Provide sessions with no charge to people who attend.
