WiRED International’s 20th Anniversary — New Issues on Our Radar

W

iRED International started operations in 1997 by providing Internet connections in war-ravaged towns throughout the former Yugoslavia. We now begin our 20th year and plan to use this Web space to review our past two decades of work and to look ahead at our expanding range of programs that provide health education in low-resource regions.

Among the new programs are those that explore the alarming impact of climate change on global health; we will focus many of our efforts this year on that growing threat, helping the people in underserved areas most affected by sea-level rise, infection migrations, heat and drought, air pollution and other debilitating consequences of a rapidly changing climate. We will address these issues in our health education programs and on this Web page.

We also will introduce topics related to domestic and farm animal health. Improving the health of animals is a reward of its own, but it also contributes directly to human health. The strong relationship between the health of people and animals is known as “One Health.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that six out of every 10 infectious diseases in humans are spread from animals. That relationship will become increasingly relevant in the face of a changing climate.

We at WiRED are excited to celebrate our 20th anniversary and hope you will join us as we continue to bring vital medical and health education, free of charge, to resource-starved communities around the world.
